The Aroma of Heaven

The Aroma of Heaven

What do we do with these moments?
1. We demand to experience heaven on earth now.

Luke 9:28-36

Kingdom of the Heavens

Are you thinking “heavenly”?

“Nearly every Christian I have spoken with has some idea that eternity is an unending church service… We have settled on an image of the never-ending sing-along in the sky, one great hymn after another, forever and ever, amen. And our heart sinks. Forever and ever? That’s it? That’s the good news? And then we sigh and feel guilty that we are not more ‘spiritual’. We lose heart, and we turn once more to the present to find what life we can.”
-John Eldredge The Journey of Desire

Maintaining Zeal for God in a Fallen World

Maintaining Zeal for God in a Fallen World
Nehemiah 13
Rebuilding: A study of Nehemiah
Spring 2008

Big Idea  Maintaining zeal for God in the midst of the battlegrounds of a fallen world requires intentional, sustained action…

Battle #1 – Who will rule our hearts?

Nehemiah 13: 4-9  …Then I discovered the evil that Eliashib had done on behalf of Tobiah by providing him a room in the courts of God’s house. I was greatly displeased and threw all of Tobiah’s household possessions out of the room….

A Window into Heaven

A Window into Heaven
A Study of the Ascension of Christ
Luke 24:50-53
March 30, 2008

What are we missing?
•	Missing out because of lack of interest…
•	Missing out because of tendency to dismiss desire…
•	Missing out because of an anti-physical bias…
–	Trying to develop an appetite for a disembodied existence in a non-physical Heaven is like trying to develop an appetite for gravel. No matter how sincere we are, and no matter how hard we try, it’s not going to work. Nor should it.
–	Randy Alcorn in Heaven

Engaging the Resurrection in an Age of Skepticism

Engaging the Resurrection in an Age of Skepticism
A Study of the Apostle Thomas
John 20:19-29
March 23, 2008

Thomas had formed a worldview
“The ways of making sense of our existence that we generate as a response to our essential fragility are among the most powerful things in the world. The less conscious they are the more powerful, and much will be unconscious even to the most introspective.”
-Daniel Taylor in The Myth of Certainty

John 11:16  Then Thomas (called “Twin”) said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go so that we may die with Him.”

Working as a Team

Working as a Team
Nehemiah 3
Rebuilding: A study of Nehemiah
Winter 2008

Rebuilding will take an “army”!

The team was connected & interdependent
•	“next to him…after them…”

People’s roles made sense
•	“in front of his house”
»	Motivation
»	Convenience
»	Courage

The team was diverse
•	All walks of life
•	All ages

Leaders led personally & released those around them
•	“_______ the official of _______ made repairs”

There were exceptions

Here we are…Now what?

Here we are…
Now what?

In review…
•	Nehemiah is a wine taster for the King of Persia
•	He hears of Jerusalem’s predicament: the city is destroyed
•	Nehemiah takes a risk and shares his heart with the King
•	The King gives Nehemiah permission

Nehemiah 2:11-16

The Cost of Following the Call

The Cost of Following the Call
Nehemiah 2
Part 5 of a study of Nehemiah
Winter 2008

What did God’s call require of Nehemiah?
1.	He had to wait on God
•	REFLECTION  Are you in a waiting period? What things is God putting His finger on as you struggle to wait?

2.	He had to face his fears
