The Aroma of Heaven
What do we do with these moments?
1. We demand to experience heaven on earth now.
Luke 9:28-36
“Jesus took Peter, James, and John up on a mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Then two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared and began talking with Jesus. They were glorious to see. And they were speaking about his exodus from this world, which was about to be fulfilled. Peter and the others had fallen asleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with him. As Moses and Elijah were standing to leave, Peter, not even knowing what he was saying, blurted out, ‘Master, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah’ But even as he was saying this, a cloud came over them, and terror gripped them as the cloud covered them. Then a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.’”
Romans 1:23,25
“Instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols…They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise.”
1 John 2:15-17
“Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from the world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave…”
What do we do with these moments?
1. We demand to experience heaven on earth now.
2. We release the demand for heaven on earth now and allow these experiences to point us to our real home.
Hebrews 11:8-10
“It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going. And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived there by faith—for he was a foreigner, living in tents...
Hebrews 11:8-10
“Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a city designed and built by God.”
Hebrews 11:24-26
“It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin. He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ that to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward.”
1 Peter 1:3-6
“All praise to God, the Father or our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.
1 Peter 1:3-6
“And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.
So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while…”
How do we let the aroma of Heaven point us to our real home?
1. Ask why? What about this moment seems right?
2. Ask what that communicates about God, and what must be true about eternity.
3. Reflect on how this moment is fleeting, yet beautiful.
4. Reflect on this moment in its pure and undefiled
